Low Altitude Wind Shear Detection Using Airport Surveillance Radars
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes an enhanced weather processor for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR9) that will include Doppler wind estimation for the detection of low altitude wind shear, scan-to-scan tracking to provide estimates of the speed and direction of storm movement and suppression of spurious weather reports currently generated by the ASR-9’s six-level weather channel during episodes of anomalous radar energy propagation (AP). This ASR-9 Wind Shear Processor (WSP) will be implemented as a retrofit to the ASR-9 through the addition of interfaces, receiving chain hardware and high-speed digital processing and display equipment.*

Wind Shear Detection with Airport Surveillance Radars
Airport surveillance radars (ASR) utilize a broad, cosecant-squared elevation beam pattern, rapid azimuthal antenna scanning, and coherent pulsed-Doppler processing to detect. and track approaching and departing aircraft. These radars, because of location, rapid scan rate, and direct air traffic control (ATe) data link, can also provide flight controllers with timely information on weather cond...

A Study of Dry Microburst Detection with Airport Surveillance Radars
This report evaluates the capability of Airport Surveillance Radars (ASRs) for the detection of low altitude wind shear associated with the outflows of dry microbursts. It describes results of simulations of dry microburst observations by an ASR. These simulations incorporated weather and clutter data collected by the FL-2 pencil-beam Doppler weather radar at Denver Stapleton Airport in 1988 an...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of Terminal Wind-shear Detection Systems
Low-level wind shear, especially a microburst, is very hazardous to aircraft departing or approaching an airport. The danger became especially clear in a series of fatal commercial airliner accidents in the 1970s and 1980s at U.S. airports. In response, the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) developed and deployed three ground-based lowaltitude wind-shear detection systems: the Low Altitude Wind She...
متن کاملWind-Shear System Cost-Benefit Analysis
A series of fatal commercial aviation accidents starting in the 1970s led to the identification of thunderstorm-related wind shear as a critical hazard to aircraft takeoffs and landings. In aggregate, these accidents resulted in over 400 fatalities and pressured the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to develop effective warning technologies. In response, the aviation community invested in a...
